USDA Wildlife Services and grapes growers throughout Missouri have been working together to resolve bird damage at many of your vineyards. Problems from American robins, European starlings, and other birds are costing grape growers thousands of dollars annually.
One method to potentially mitigate some of the bird damage, as well as rodent damage, is to release Red-tailed hawks and other raptors at your vineyards. Some of these released raptors might simply leave your farm, but some might find the area suitable and stay for a longer period of time. Red-tailed hawks and other raptors are not known to cause any damage to grape crops or equipment.
If you are located within 80 miles of Kansas City, St. Joseph, St. Louis, or Warrensburg, please feel free to contact USDA Wildlife Services at (866) 487-3297. You will be put in contact with a local wildlife biologist to discuss options for releasing raptors at your vineyard.

Mark your calendars for the MGGA Annual Meeting and Viticulture Field Day hosted by ICCVE on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. It will kick off at 9 a.m. at Eckles Hall on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus.
Join fellow grape growers for a day of education and information with top pest-management experts from around the country. Registration is $15 for MGGA members and $20 for non-members. Registration includes lunch.

The Missouri Grape Growers Association is led by a board of directors elected by the membership. Your board consists of a president, vice-president, secretary-treasure, past-president and three “at-large” board directors. These seven volunteers meet from time to time via teleconference or in person to advance the purpose and goals of the organization.
Per the bi-laws of the association, several board positions are up for election this year. If you are interested in serving on the board or would like to nominate someone for an open position, please submit all nominations to the MGGA secretary-treasure by May 1st for inclusion on the member ballots.
The three open positions include the 1) vice-president, 2) secretary-treasurer and 3)one at-large board member. Those whose position is up for election may consider running again.
